What Happens When Parts Are on Backorder at Shockwarehouse

At Shockwarehouse, we work with major suspension manufacturers like Bilstein, Fox, Rancho, KYB, Monroe, KONI, and others. Occasionally, certain parts experience a nationwide backorder at the manufacturer level — meaning the product is temporarily unavailable across all distributors, not just our store. Here's what you need to know if this affects your order.

Why Do Backorders Happen?

Backorders can occur for several reasons:

  • High demand — a popular product may temporarily sell faster than the manufacturer can produce it
  • Supply chain delays — raw material shortages or shipping disruptions from the manufacturer's facility
  • New model releases — when a manufacturer launches an updated part, stock of the new version may take time to build
  • Seasonal surges — spring and summer months often see higher demand for suspension parts across the industry

When a part goes on backorder, it typically affects all retailers and distributors at the same time. This is a manufacturer-level issue, not something specific to Shockwarehouse.

How You'll Know If Your Order Is Affected

If you place an order and one or more items are on backorder, our customer service team will reach out to let you know. We'll provide:

  • The reason for the delay
  • The estimated availability date from the manufacturer (when available)
  • Your options — wait for the part, substitute a different product, or cancel

Note: You will receive an order confirmation email when you place your order, but you won't receive tracking information until the parts actually ship. If you haven't received a tracking number and it's been more than a few business days, feel free to reach out for a status update.

How Long Do Backorders Take?

There is no single answer — it depends entirely on the manufacturer and the specific product. Typical backorder timeframes:

  • 1–3 weeks — common for parts that are temporarily out at the warehouse
  • 4–8 weeks — typical for manufacturer-level production backorders
  • 8+ weeks — possible in rare cases for discontinued or low-volume specialty parts

Manufacturers provide estimated restocking dates, but these can shift. We'll keep you updated if the timeline changes.

Your Options During a Backorder

If your order is affected by a backorder, you have several options:

  1. Wait for the part — we'll ship it as soon as it becomes available, and you'll receive tracking information at that time
  2. Substitute a different product — our team can help you find an alternative shock, strut, or suspension component that fits your vehicle and is currently in stock
  3. Cancel the backordered item — if you'd rather not wait, we can cancel and refund the backordered portion of your order

Just contact our customer service team to discuss your preference.

Split Shipments and Partial Orders

If you ordered multiple items and only some are on backorder, the available items will typically ship right away. The backordered items will ship separately once they become available. This means you may receive multiple shipments at different times for a single order — this is normal.

Some products, especially Bilstein shocks and struts, may also ship directly from the manufacturer's warehouse rather than from Shockwarehouse. These shipments may arrive in different packaging or on a different timeline than the rest of your order.

Checking Your Backorder Status

To get an update on a backordered item, contact us with your order number (starts with "S"). Our team will check with the warehouse and the manufacturer for the latest estimated availability.

Tips to Avoid Backorder Delays

  • Order early — if you have an upcoming installation appointment, order your parts well in advance
  • Ask about availability — before ordering, feel free to contact us to check real-time stock availability for specific part numbers
  • Consider alternatives — if your first-choice brand is backordered, we carry multiple brands for most applications and can help you find an equivalent option that's in stock
